Thoughts on James
On this past Monday night episode of Resistance Reads, Matt and I talked about Percival Everrett’s 2024 book, James.
It’s a retelling of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective and it really makes you think about race, freedom, and how power shapes people’s lives.
One thing that stuck with me is how these systems of oppression from the past are still echoing today. We compared Huckleberry Finn to James, discussed code switching as a form of resistance, and broke down the anthropological concept of structural violence.
If you haven’t listened yet, you can check out the full episode on YouTube (where every third Monday we livestream) or any other major podcast service.
